This newspaper article from the year 1872, illustrates how many immigrants have settled into the United States over the course of ten years(1861-1871). This source is significant because it shows what countries immigrants were traveling from. Also it shows that America was the place for opportunity. In this source you can see on the left, the six specific countries that were most popular moving into the United States. To the right of the countries are the amount of people that came over. This gives you an idea of how America grew at the time with the help of immigrants pouring in. I learned from this source that majority of immigrants from the time period 1861-1871 were from Germany. Also I learned that the total amount of immigrants coming into the United States was 2,320,484.

This newspaper article from the year 1891, portrays the image that immigrants were given in America. At the very top of the article it states, "DETECTS PHYSICAL IMPERFECTIONS IN IMMIGRANTS," and below it states, "It also looks out for people who are insane or idiotic-poor foreigners are subjected to a rigid examination before being allowed to land." This quote indicates that immigrants must go through a physical examination to determine if they are "good" enough to stay within the United States. The significance of this article is that immigrants were treated as if they were inhumane. This source explains what immigrants experience before they actually entered into America; they had to go through a physical examination. I learned that if immigrants were mentally or physically unwell they were not allowed to enter the United States.
